Other areas are predominantly forestry plantation exhibiting some cleared coupes. The area is generally an attractive intimate scale landscape acting as a transition zone between the pastoral river valley bottom and the upland moorland of the Berwyn range.

Q25 - What is the sense of place/local distinctiveness

  • Moderate
    • A relatively large homogenous tract of wooded and mosaic hillside that displays attractive landscape features and good and varied vegetation cover

Condition

Q26 - Are there any significant threats to the current integrity and condition of the visual & sensory features of the area?

  • Not known

Q27 - Condition:

  • Poor
    • Many of the hedgerow trees, woodlands and hedgerows required long term management if the area is to retain its existing landscape character

Q28 - Trend:

  • Constant

Recommendations

Q29 - Existing management

  • Generally Inappropriate

Q30 - Management recommendations

  • The vegetation cover in particular hedgerow tree and woodland blocks require immediate management of the overall landscape character and field pattern is to be retained. Enhance the appearance of forest blocks, introduce phased replacement and management of over mature and diseased tree and hedgerow stock, Enhance dominant vegetation through management and phased replacement of forest plantation with broadleaves. Introduce long term management plan to retain existing landscape character. Encourage adoption of traditional land management techniques to preserve landscape character - hedge laying, vernacular styles of stone walling and diversification of species.

Q31 - Define the key qualities that should be conserved and enhanced

  • Balance of extensive and well defined vegetation cover to open field pattern. Management of existing vegetation

Q32 - Define the key qualities that should be changed:

  • Diversification of single species woodland blocks and phased replacement/management of mature/over mature vegetation

Q33 - Define the key elements that should be conserved and enhanced

  • Field pattern to woodland block ratio. Field boundaries species diversity

Q34 - Define the key elements that should be changed:

  • Long term vegetation management

Q42 - What baseline information source was used for Aspect Area boundary mapping?

  • Other
    • OS Data and aerial photographs

Q43 - If OS Data was used, what was the scale?

  • 1:10,000 and 1:25,000

Q44 - What is the justification for the Aspect Area boundaries?

  • Topography and vegetation cover/ landform

Natural Beauty

Q45 - Contribution of this area to natural beauty

  • No Answer

Evaluation

Q46 - Evaluation Criteria: Scenic quality

  • High
    • Attractive and diverse vegetation cover emphasising underlying topography

Q47 - Evaluation Criteria: Integrity

  • Low
    • Long term and immediate land management of mature vegetation required

Q48 - Evaluation Criteria: Character

  • High
    • Attractive landscape character and strong sense of place created by the existing vegetation pattern but requiring management

Q49 - Evaluation Criteria: Rarity

  • Moderate
    • One of several similar valley sides within the study area but attractive nonetheless

Q50 - Evaluation Criteria: Overall Evaluation

  • Moderate
    • Attractive and diverse vegetation cover emphasising underlying topography. See Q.51

Q51 - Justification of overall evaluation

  • Attractive landscape character and strong sense of place created by the existing vegetation pattern but requiring management the diverse vegetation cover emphasises the underlying topography and gives anscenic and attractive overall landscape setting for the Dee Valley - however urgent management required to stabilise vegetation decline due to maturity = Moderate

Visible Settings

Q62 - Visible settings of LANDMAP V&S areas

This is a Zone of Theoretical Visibility (ZTV), calculated using a 30 metre Digital Terrain Model (DTM), using multiple observer points scattered across the area, 1.5m above ground level, and taking into account the Earth’s curvature. The data does not extend beyond 35km from an observer point, meaning that more distant views may also be possible.

Q63 - Visible Settings of Designated Landscapes

Q64 - Key views into or out from Designated Landscapes
