Q4 - Summary Description / Key Patterns and Elements

  • Many of the steep valley sides are cloaked in deciduous woodland, lending a wooded aspect to the area. It is, however, predominantly an agricultural landscape, with small-medium sized fields bounded by banks topped with hedges and dispersed farms. Also in this area are the small nucleated/linear settlements of Rhydlewis and Brongest. These generally have an historic core of (mainly) 19th century stone-built dwellings, but often with numerous modern houses. There are currently 89 HERs, 13 LBs and 1 SAM in the area, primarily post medieval quarries, settlement, cottage sites, religious, industrial and secular buildings.

  • Maintenance of existing access, and landscape features integral to the appreciation of the historic landscape (such as field boundaries and traditional agricultural management), are appropriate. Change of settlement pattern and agricultural management may be inappropriate. Maintain and restore traditional field boundaries, control stock levels in areas of extant archaeological remains to ensure balance between management of scrub growth, overgrazing and erosion of historic structures etc. Maintain traditional appearance of dwellings and agricultural buildings.
