Q4 - Summary Description / Key Patterns and Elements

  • A largely unenclosed aspect area centred on Mynydd y Lan. The aspect boundary to the east is defined by the interface between the modern planted forestry of Mynyddislwyn (CynonHL936) and the unenclosed moorland of Mynydd y Lan. The Sirhowy Valley (CynonHL660) borders the south of the aspect, whilst the enclosed fieldscape of Mynyddislwyn defines the northern limit of the area. Cwm Nant Tudor is now under modern forestry, although some semi-natural woodland has been retained. A limited attempt to enclose Cwm Nat Tudor has been made, however much of this remains under the modern forestry. Several post-medieval derelict houses exist to the south of the aspect along with a few post-medieval quarries.

Evaluation

Q35 - Evaluation Criteria: Integrity

  • High
    • The coherence of this landscape, characterised as largely unenclosed upland moor with a discrete area of ancient, semi-natural woodland at the southern end of the aspect area, has remained largely intact, although much of the semi-natural woodland has now been superseded by modern forestry.

Q36 - Evaluation Criteria: Survival

  • Moderate
    • The archaeological record for this area is modest in scope, restricted to several dispersed, isolated farmsteads of post-medieval date which survive in variable condition; the farm at Hafod-tudur ganol (GGAT PRN 07378g; PRN 07379g) has been completely submerged within a modern forestry plantation.

Q37 - Evaluation Criteria: Condition

  • Low

Q38 - Evaluation Criteria: Rarity

  • Moderate
    • One of a small number of areas of unenclosed moorland within the Caerphilly/RCT historic landscape which has not been affected by 19th-20th century industrial extractive activity.

Q39 - Evaluation Criteria: Potential

  • Moderate
    • Due to the limited nature of the archaeological record for this area, the potential for further investigation appears to be minimal, although, in view of the density of prehistoric sites which have been identified on other neighbouring areas of upland moor (eg. Mynydd Eglwysilan), it is possible that further evidence of prehistoric activity might be revealed through aerial reconnaissance or field survey.

Q40 - Evaluation Criteria: Overall Evaluation

  • Moderate
    • An extensive, relatively well-preserved tract of open upland moor with limited encroachment by modern forestry; the moderate value assigned to this landscape is based on the modest nature of the archaeological resource recorded within this area.

Q41 - Justification of overall evaluation

  • An extensive, relatively well-preserved tract of open upland moor with limited encroachment by modern forestry; the moderate value assigned to this landscape is based on the modest nature of the archaeological resource recorded within this area.
